How To Work From Home Like A Pro
Do you want to start a business from home? There are a lot of people who think they can work from anywhere, but it takes a certain skill set and dedication to make it happen. Today’s business environment is different than ever before, so it’s important to learn to be flexible and embrace change.
If you really want to work from home and live the life you want, it’s important to have the right mindset. It’s a common misconception that it’s easy to work from home—that you can just flip a switch and turn your home office into a professional environment. In reality, it’s quite the opposite. Working from home is hard work and you have to be ready to put in some long hours in order to get the expected results. These suggestions are aimed towards starting your journey as an entrepreneur. Even though I am not addressing telecommuters, some may still find these tips helpful.
Learn how to get organized, avoid distractions, stay focused, and still have fun while working from home or in a remote office environment.
Why Working From Home Is Hard
So, how does all this apply to you, and why would you want to work from home? There are a lot of people who say that working from home is great, and you can probably point out a number of successful examples to support that claim. But, you can also point out that most of the successful cases you see aren't actually managing a business from home. They're simply telecommuting, and that's not what I'm talking about here.
The first thing I think about when I'm working from home is my productivity. Because, let's face it, there are a lot of distractions when you're at home. The office, even if it is only just across the street, seems like an island of sanity in a sea of insanity. But there are ways to counteract those distractions.
If you're an entrepreneur, there's a strong chance that you already work from home. Some people even start their day with coffee and a phone call to a client. But if you're someone who's still new to the working-from-home thing, the first time you do it can be quite the experience. There are several reasons working from home is hard: 1) Your work hours don't necessarily align with your personal life; 2) You can’t work effectively while you're being interrupted; 3) You can’t interact with people while you work, and; 4) Your work doesn’t always pay you the same as when you were in an office. Essentially, this makes it hard to stay motivated and our progress is more difficult to measure.
Here are some things that might come to mind. Do you have a space in your home that you could turn into a home office? Or if you have a spare room that you could convert into a home office, what would that look like? If you're already working in your home office, consider creating a separate office area that you can shut off or turn off from your main space to avoid distractions and focus. Also, keep your workspace simple and clutter free.
Create Your Professional Comfort Zone
When you are an entrepreneur, you need a place where you can get away from everything else and get your work done. If you work at home, it is important to get a home office because otherwise, you will be distracted by everything else going on around you. You need to find a comfortable place where you can get some privacy and focus. You will also need a lot of organization to get things set up and organized. If you don't organize yourself well, then you will be wasting too much time looking for things that you need.
There are many different ways to set up your office space so that it will be conducive to your productivity. Some of the ways to create a work space are as follows:
Have a Dedicated Space
If you already have a room that you can use as a dedicated workspace, you can make it as organized as possible. For example, you could use that room for a desk, a computer, and some filing cabinets. You can even add some shelves and some nice, comfortable chairs if you want to spend time there. The point is to create a space where you will be able to get your work done without being bothered by anything else.
Use an Area with Lots of Light
Having light is very important when you are working in an office. Not only does it help you to stay alert, but it also makes you more productive. So, if you don't have lots of light, then you are going to be more tired and it will affect your work.
If you don't have enough natural light in your home, you can use some artificial lighting. There are lots of things that you can do to ensure that you have lots of natural light. For example, you can put mirrors around your house so that you can see the sunlight coming into your house from different directions.
A home office is a room where you can work at your computer and focus on your work. Many people say that a home office is the most efficient way to work because you can focus on one thing and avoid distractions. The downside of a home office is that it takes up valuable living space or you may not have the time to create a home office in your home.
You need to figure out what works for you. You may have to compromise. You might need to work at your kitchen table for a while. You may need to use your bedroom or a spare room in your home as a home office. Whatever works, you'll be more focused when you work in a place that doesn't have any distractions.
So You Dedicated a Space as a Home Office, now what?
Whether that means you're doing freelance work, writing a book, or starting a business, having a place that's separate from the home can be incredibly valuable to entrepreneurs and their families. The problem is that many of us don't always have the time, energy, or resources to create a home office. However, when people have a home office, they're more productive and feel better. So, what's the solution?
There are tons of resources available to help you get your home office space set up so you can do work comfortably there. For instance, many big-box retailers (like Office Depot) have a home office section. These are great options if you need something more permanent than a simple desk that you can move around. Or, if you already have a dedicated room and want to make it work better for work, there are dozens of tools and devices available to help you get organized and stay focused. If you're on a budget, start with second hand furniture. People are always upgrading and look for ways to get rid of that old (but functional) office desk and chairs.
Home offices can be great for you if you have the time and the resources to create one. But, for those of us who don't have the time, energy, or resources to create a home office, there are some tips that you can use to get started.
1. Get an extra chair. Having an extra chair is a great way to separate your work life from your home life. You'll be able to concentrate more when you're at work, because you won't be distracted by your family members. Plus, you'll have a comfortable place to sit.
2. Create a nice work environment. This includes creating a nice, organized space that you like. You might want to get a filing cabinet for your papers, some nice pens and pencils, and maybe even a desk lamp or two.
3. Use a timer. Sometimes, it's hard to focus when you're surrounded by chaos. It's much easier to work efficiently if you have a timer to remind you to stop and take breaks.
4. Find the right tools. In order to work efficiently, you'll want to get the right tools. These include an office organizer, a computer, and other tools that can help you to be more organized.
The first thing to do is decide where you would like to put a desk. You can use a corner in your bedroom, for example. If you are going to put a desk in a room, you will need to make sure that the room has enough lighting as mentioned before. Another good idea is to buy a bright light bulb that is specifically made for a home office. A lot of people end up using an old lamp that they already had and then they think they need a new one, when all they needed was an appropriate bulb. When it comes to light bulbs, wattage is just as important as "temperature". Try different variations and choose the one that makes it easiest for you to read. Don't skip this important tip, your eyes will thank you.
Find the Right Work/Life Balance for You
When you are an entrepreneur, you can't let distractions get in the way of being focused on your work. The best thing to do is to create a home office where you can get some peace and quiet so that you can get work done. When you have a home office, you are less likely to get distracted by things like watching TV, talking with your family, or playing games on your smartphone.
Set business hours. You won't feel guilty about working at your kitchen table instead of your computer desk if its during business hours. You will also have a nice view of your family while you are working. A word of caution: you will find a lot more distractions and lack the necessary privacy while you work. It can be very easy to get overwhelmed and unfocused when you work at home. Ensuring everyone in your household knows what you are doing and support your schedule is essential.
In order to stay focused and be more productive, you need to be in a place where you can focus. Having a home office where you can get some peace and quiet is perfect for you. You don't want to be interrupted. It can be very distracting when other people are around you. If your family knows what you are doing, then they can help you get your work done. They can come over and visit you or they can watch television or play a video game while you work.
Being an entrepreneur can be both extremely rewarding and extremely stressful. You have to do everything on your own. That means that you have to be organized, organized, organized. If you aren't, you will burn out quickly and not be successful.
Set Boundaries
It can be difficult to have a home office if you have kids. When this happens, it is important to find a place where they can't disturb you when you are working. That can be difficult if you don't have a separate area for yourself. You may have to put in some extra effort and do some planning to create a home office that is suitable for you. For example, you can put your desk in the garage, and that way you won't be interrupted by your kids or others when you are trying to get work done.
If you have a small child, you may not be able to use a home office because of their higher needs and the noise. If you have young children, they understandably need to be taken care of and you can't work at the same time. But not all is lost though, you just need to get creative. A couple of solutions is to schedule naps for them or plan on getting up earlier than them or going to bed later to get some work done. However, if your children are a bit older they may understand that it's necessary for you to be at work and there's a good chance they will be supportive. If your child is a teenager, then you can let them know that you need a bit of time to be alone and that it's okay for them to get something to eat or go to the bathroom if they need to. Having a home office gives you a chance to focus on your work. You won't be tempted to spend time on Facebook and other social media sites when you are working.
Conclusion
There are too many things to consider when starting a business from home but if you follow these ideas you're off to a great start. Everything mentioned here is just the beginning of an exciting and rewarding experience. If there is one thing that will speed things up and make this process easier, it's to find someone already doing it, find a mentor. If you're still exploring and don't know what you want to do, find a group of like-minded individuals that are willing to share their experiences with you. Anthony Crane has such a group and also is such a mentor; and most of his knowledge in this blog or his podcast is free. In fact just as you may be experiencing, the most common problem that people face with a strong entrepreneurial spirit is the lack of direction. Solving that problem is the main focus of MoneyGodfather.com but that's a topic for some other time.
